A Jacket Well Worn: Kazu Yokotsuka

Our latest spring collection draws upon inspiration ranging from early 20th Century architecture to 1980s vintage wear, yet remains at its essence 'Lavenham'.

We caught up with Lavenham's Head of Creative Kazu Yokotsuka to learn more about what inspired the collection.

Kazuyuki YOKOTSUKA, studied at Central Saint Martins. Kazu (as he introduces himself) went on to work in London holding design roles at British brands including Fred Perry and Margaret Howell. He currently lives in Tokyo with his family.

## What’s your favourite thing about spring in Japan? And in the UK?

It's about going outside, shopping with my family, and relaxing in the park. In the UK, you can finally drink outside.

## The gathered waist pieces draw on 1980s outdoor wear – what inspires you about those silhouettes?

Basically, I prefer clothes without unnecessary elements. I often refer to durable and practical items from the 80s and 90s.

## What inspired you to create an all-black collection this season?
Lavenham products are like a warm light. However, I felt that light cannot shine without darkness, so I started creating shadow.

## How did you arrive at the one-off quilt patterns for the Black Edition?
Various elements were incorporated. This was a major point of the time I spent as a designer at Lavenham. I lined up existing quilt patterns, things that I deconstructed and rebuilt into existing patterns, quilt patterns that I created for the first time, and influences from nature to create the best design.

This work would not have been possible without time, effort and support from the factory team. They are the link between where we’ve been and where we are going – always looking for ways to bring the designs forward without losing their original functionality, our collaboration is focused on Being Better with every quilt pattern we produce.

## Which colours do you like to style with black pieces?
White and dark chocolate.

## What interests you about the Bauhaus?
I resonate with the fact that architecture is at the heart of Bauhaus design. The design process at Lavenham is more functional than fashion design, and I feel that it is based on the Bauhaus principle of minimalism.
