Men's Classic Jacket Guide

Men's Classic Jacket Guide

The diamond-quilted riding jacket was one of the first things created by Lavenham, in Suffolk in the early 1970s, shortly after world's first nylon quilted horse rug. The idea was to take the tailored cut of a traditional wool hacking jacket and make it in the same durable quilted nylon as the rugs. The Raydon was born.

Since then, Lavenham Classics have left the stable having long since been adopted into the everyday wardrobe thanks to their practicality and understated style. This guide explains the differences between the styles, how to wear them, and how to find your ideal size.

The Raydon

The original Lavenham quilted jacket, the Raydon is the closest jacket to the first pieces Lavenham made. The tailored cut and back vents were designed to sit neatly over a saddle and today allow for ultimate ease of movement. Smart enough for work and practical enough for every day, along with the Denham our best-selling jacket.

The Denham

The Denham is very similar to the Raydon, just a touch larger, with a few extra centimetres across the chest, shoulders, arms and length. In the late 1990s the Raydon was adopted by Japanese salarymen as a practical yet smart over layer to sit atop tailoring. The Denham was created in response to the trend; by slightly enlarging the fit of the Raydon more room was left for a suit jacket.

The Denham works brilliantly if intended to be worn over tailoring, layered over chunkier knitwear, or for those who enjoy a more oversized fit.

The Chantry

The Chantry is an overcoat made from the signature 2" diamond quilted Lavenster seen across Lavenham Classics. Eyelet details allow the longer length coat to remain breathable, whilst the compact wadding is supremely warm without adding weight or bulk.

The Zipped Craydon

Similar in fit to the Denham, the Zipped Craydon features a hood rather than a collar, and a zip fastening to ensure it really keeps out the chill and light rain. All our classics are water resistant, and good in a drizzle not a downpour. The Lavenster fabric they are made from is fully waterproof however the quilting process creates thousands of tiny holes in the fabric, meaning they are not full waterproof. The addition of a large hood, higher neck line and zip makes the Zipped Craydon jacket the most suitable for rainy days.

  • A hooded version of the Denham jacket
  • Regular fit
  • Back vents
  • Water resistant
  • Lightweight yet warm wadding
  • Double zip fastening
  • 100% recycled Lavenster™ polyester
  • 2 x Patch pockets
  • 1 x Interior chest pocket
  • Organic cotton corduroy binding
  • Made in Suffolk, England

Sizing Advice: Runs small. Size up one or two sizes.

Possibly the most versatile Lavenham Classic, the Denston features a removable hood and a collar allowing it be worn in two ways. The hood attaches using press studs places around the collar seam.

  • Collared jacket with a removable hood
  • Regular fit
  • Back vents
  • Hood that removes with press studs
  • Water resistant
  • Lightweight yet warm wadding
  • Button fastening
